April 20 marks the annual opening day of the Vegetable Expo—a tradition that has continued uninterrupted for 20 years. This year’s expo is markedly different from the previous 20 editions. In response to the current pandemic, the Shouguang Municipal Party Committee and Municipal Government have proactively shifted their approach by hosting an “Online Vegetable Expo (Seed Expo).” Greenhouse facilities have been virtually transported online, inviting people from across the country to explore digital exhibition halls and live-streamed studios in a “cloud-based” experience. The opening ceremony of the expo was held at 9:00 a.m. on April 20 in Shouguang Vegetable Town. Several platforms—including the Xinhua News Agency client, Shandong TV, Toutiao, Douyin, Shouguang TV, and the Shouguang Cloud app—provided live coverage of the event.

The main exhibition area of this year’s Vegetable Expo covers 450,000 square meters and includes 11 pavilions, a Vegetable Museum, and an open-square exhibition zone. Together, these venues showcase more than 2,000 vegetable and horticultural varieties and over 80 different cultivation models—among them, more than 300 varieties are new additions. Meanwhile, the Seed Expo area, featuring 270,000 square meters of advanced-material solar greenhouses, highlights eight major crop categories—including tomatoes, peppers, eggplants, and cucumbers—and boasts a total of over 4,280 superior varieties. With such an enormous exhibition space, it would probably take several days just to explore it all in person. But thanks to the “online exhibition,” everyone can virtually “tour” the entire venue from the comfort of their own home.

This year’s Vegetable Expo features over 230 meticulously designed landscape displays, composed of more than 1,000 varieties of vegetables, fruits, and grains. In addition, the expo brings together over 2,000 vegetable and horticultural varieties, more than 80 different cultivation models, and over 50 cutting-edge vegetable-growing technologies.

The Vegetable Expo and Seed Expo is not only a grand event for agriculture, science and technology, and exchange, but also a showcase of new vegetable varieties, innovative cultivation methods, cutting-edge technologies, and modern management concepts, as well as rich cultural heritage. It has boosted the quality and industrial upgrading of vegetables and played a positive role in rural revitalization and the transition of agriculture from old to new growth drivers.
